History

At about the turn of the century, a leading steel manufacturer made its facilities from Scranton Pa. to West Seneca, New York (later named Lackawanna,NY) . Many of the workers of this steel mill also decided to move along with the employer and settled in the area we now know as "over the bridge". Several Polish families that came to the Lackawanna area were members of Father Hodur’s Scranton Polish Catholic Church, but found that their church was not known here. By 1905 a committee was organized to establish a Polish Catholic Church in Lackawanna, NY. On special occasions, Fr. Hodur would come to the town to hear confessions and administer to his people, separated by great distance. Land was eventually purchased on Holland Street, but with economic set back in the area and committee being unable to gain momentum for building, the seed of the parish laid dormant until 1929.

A committee headed by Pawel Sawicki was assisted by Bishop Jan Jasinski, of the Buffalo - Pittsburgh diocese in establishing a Polish National Catholic Church parish in Lackawanna. Using a rented hall on Ridge Road, services were held here until June 1,1930 when Holy Trinity Church was completed on Raymond (later Pulaski Street) Street. The new facility was blessed by Bishop Jasinski in a solemn ceremony preceded by a large procession from their former site to the new church. The first pastor assigned to this church was the Rev. Jakobsche, who transacted the land purchase, under the pastorship of Rev. Ancerewicz, the cornerstone was laid and Rev. R Jakubowski served as pastor at the time of the church’s completion. Being a small parish, the number of pastors has been great, it was not until the appointment of the Rev. Matthew Kubik that the parish gained stability and prospered. Fr. Kubik was elevated to the rank of Senior priest for his dedication to his church and serves as its pastor for almost 50 years.
